GDC 2008: Uncharted: Johnny's Fortune

Hi, I'm Nathan Drake. Welcome to Jackass.

During a 58-minute presentation titled "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Post-Mortem: Amazing Feats of Daring," Naughty Dog Game Designer Richard Lemarchand dropped a megaton on the standing-room only audience.

Nathan Drake is based -- in part -- on Johnny Knoxville.

Okay, maybe that doesn't deserve the moniker of "megaton," but the fact that designers began basing Nathan on cynical, nice guy Knoxville when they couldn't get a handle on the in-game character was just one of many anecdotes Lemarchand shared during the presentation.

I'm sorry for Dukes of Hazzard.

Although he dropped some other gems in his speech -- aiming used to be automatic (then they found manual aiming to be a better fit), enemies were originally going to use an extensive wardrobe system to prevent it from seeming like you were seeing the same guy over and over (this died due to time constraints), etc. -- Lemarchand didn't say what Naughty Dog will be up to next.

"Whatever it is, we're very excited about it," he said.
